A couple of different symptoms can come along with having a battery percentage meter on your Mac that is inaccurate. The most obvious one is your computer randomly shutting off and dying before the battery percentage hits zero percent or even gets low. The other is a perceived sense of quick battery drain or a drop in the lifespan of a battery.

If you suspect that the battery on your Mac is displaying an inaccurate percentage of battery life remaining, try some of these at-home solutions to reset or recalibrate the battery. Otherwise, a Genius Bar appointment at your local Apple store might be necessary.

Reset the System Management Controller (SMC)

While not common, it is not unusual that during a download of a large file such as the Catalina installer one or more files can become corrupt. The simple solution is to delete the “Install macOS Catalina: installer located in your /Application folder. Having the exact same issue, Bootable usb created properly not showing up in macbook pro boot menu, only hard drive shows. Installation is corrupt. What worked for me and hopefully others is hold Command + R just after you press the on button. And when an app hangs, it freezes you out and won't let you do anything, including quit out of it. Enter: Force Quit. You can call up the Force Quit menu from the Apple icon in the upper-left. I recently purchased a used macbook air and when i went to reset it. I followed the steps and erased the memory on the disk. Then i got to a point where it wanted me to re install MAC OS X Lion. I tried to do so but a pop up appeared that said i had to login to a Apple account that had purchased it. Tested on production 1.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i5-based 13-inch MacBook Pro systems with 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, and prerelease macOS Big Sur. Tested with prerelease Safari 14.0.1 and Chrome v85.0.4183.121. Performance will vary based on usage, system configuration, network connection,.

The System Management Controller, or SMC, on your Mac is buried within the operating system and groups together various functions involving the display, battery power, booting, shutting down, sleeping, and more. If something gets out of whack with your battery indicator, resetting the SMC could refresh the battery percentage so it’s accurate again.

How to reset the SMC depends on the type of Mac you own. If you have an older Mac notebook with a removable battery, the first thing you’ll want to do is shut down the computer and disconnect it from a power source. Remove the battery. Then, press and hold the power button for five seconds while the battery is still out of the machine. Insert the battery again, connect the laptop to a power source and turn it back on.

If you have a newer MacBook model without a removable battery, the procedure is a bit different. Shut down the computer, but plug it in to a power source while off. Press the Shift, Control, Option and power keys all at the same time — the former three must be the keys on the left side of the keyboard.

Closely monitor the battery percentage your Mac displays relative to your usage over the next day or two and observe if the SMC reset fixed the problem.

Calibrate Your Mac’s Battery

Not only is keeping your battery calibrated important so that the battery percentage on your Mac stays accurate, but it’s vital for optimal battery health over years and charge cycles.

Battery calibration is easier than you might think. You should basically just use your computer like you normally do, except let the battery show off every bit of its power. First, plug in your Mac to a power source and charge it to full capacity, 100 percent. After fully charged, leave it plugged in for about two hours so it sits at a 100-percent charge.

Unplug the Mac and start using it, letting the battery drain naturally. Eventually the battery will get low, so let it drain until the computer automatically goes to sleep. Once it’s been asleep for a few minutes, plug the charging cable into your MacBook and recharge the computer back to 100 percent.

This entire cycle is what calibrates the battery. Once the MacBook is recharged again, unplug the charging cable and notice as you use the machine whether the battery percentage appears to be more in sync with your usage.

Tip: For an even closer look at your battery usage, open the Activity Monitor app on your Mac. Click the Energy tab at the top and glance down below for battery charts and statistics on current energy impact, remaining charge, time remaining, and battery drain over the past 12 hours.

Schedule a Genius Bar Appointment

When all else fails, make your battery someone else’s problem! The geniuses behind the Genius Bar at your local Apple retail store are probably capable of fixing the battery accuracy issue pretty quickly.

Chances are they’ll take care of it using one of two methods depending on the cause. The first solution is to replace the battery. This is covered if you’re under warranty, including the one-year limited warranty if it’s a manufacturer’s defect. Otherwise, prices vary by MacBook model.

Coming in at $129 are the replacement batteries for any MacBook Air, the 13-inch MacBook and the 13-inch and 15-inch non-retina MacBook Pros. $179 replaces the battery in the 17-inch MacBook Pro and $199 covers the 12-inch MacBook and 13-inch and 15-inch retina MacBook Pros.

These prices include the battery itself and the repair service, i.e. the Apple Geniuses recycle the old battery and install the new one for you.

If you don’t need a battery replacement, the Geniuses still have tools on hand for running tests on your MacBook and diagnosing any issues, so it still may be worth a trip to the Apple Store. The cost to fix any diagnosed issues will differ based on the cause and procedure.

The best way to schedule a Genius Bar appointment is through Apple’s website.

A Guide to Fixing Touch ID Not Working on MacBook

You usually have no problem waiting in line to get services. But when it comes to using your Macbook Pro, it may be another story.

For me, I hated it when the applications I use became unresponsive, not to mention that when the entire system froze up. Although I was told that patience is a virtue, somehow I just don’t have it with my beloved MacBook.

How about you? Does your MacBook Pro sometimes freeze or hang up for no reason? Or the spinning beach ball often appears?

If this has happened to you, be aware that your MacBook Pro may have some issues. But, there are always fixes out there.

I’ve grouped all MacBook freezing issues into four different scenarios (thanks to our reader Carol’s feedback). Find the one that applies to your situation and follow the guide to fix the issue.

Scenario 1: An app is frozen (you can move cursor)

Details: this kind of apps usually demand a lot of system resources to process. For example, Adobe Photoshop, iMovie, or sometimes the web browser you use Safari. When you click around, the app just hangs with the cursor spinning like a pinwheel. The application won’t respond to any commands.

Reasons: the app may be waiting for other hardware resources to become available, or the software may have a bug that drops itself into a calculation loop.

How to Fix:

  1. If you haven’t saved your work, wait for a few minutes. It may become responsive again (hopefully).
  2. Otherwise, simply force quit the app. To do so, go to the Apple logo on the top left corner, click on it and select the “Force Quit” option. Then highlight the unresponsive app, and click “Force Quit” to exit.

You can also press “Command + Option + Esc”, it does the same thing.

Warning: a force quit on a running Mac application may cause you to lose any content that hasn’t been saved. Be cautious before you take this action.

Scenario 2: macOS totally freezes (you can’t move cursor)

Details: the whole system becomes completely unresponsive. You are unable to use the keyboard to type, the mouse cursor is unable to move as you want, the same screen seems just hang there for good. Sometimes you also hear the loud noise coming from the fan (if you are using an old MacBook with an HDD inside).

Reasons: It happens on rare occasions, but the issue could result from over-used system resources, MacBook Pro uptime too long, hard disk errors, etc.

How to Fix:

  1. You’ll have to do a hard reboot. Press the power button for 3-5 seconds to force a shut-down of the computer. Press it again to restart.
  2. Clean up your MacBook hard drive and fix potential disk errors — you can do this quickly using CleanMyMac.

Note: if this happens while you’re updating to latest macOS, the progress bar keeps hanging at 99% (or only one minute remaining), you’ll have to quit the update. A working solution is: first upgrade your MacBook to an ealier version, then update to the latest version.

Scenario 3: MacBook Pro keeps freezing randomly

Details: Your Mac just freezes without any signs and it happens every few hours or days. One second your MacBook is working perfectly fine, the other second everything just hangs up — the cursor won’t move. If you were watching a video, horizontal lines cut through the screen. It seems the only solution to make it work again is to hold the power button to reboot.

Reasons: your MacBook’s hardware has problems — for example, you just installed extra RAM improperly or the System Management Controller (SMC) has some issues.

How to Fix:

1. Reset SMC and RVRAM. Learn how to do so from this MacWorld tutorial video.

2. If the random freezing still happens, take your MacBook Pro to an Apple Genius Bar or a local computer shop and have a geek run hardware diagnostics. Then fix the issues based on their suggestions.

Scenario 4: Mac cursor freezes while opening a specific app

Details: Your Mac cursor would freeze (for anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 mins) when you launch apps like Photos, Time Machine, Adobe Photoshop, etc.

Reasons: You’ve enlarged the Mac cursor.

How to Fix: Adjust cursor size to normal.

  1. Click on the Apple logo on top left, select “System Preferences.”
  2. Then click “Accessibility” > “Display.”
  3. You’ll see a window (as shown below), navigate the cursor size bar and adjust it to normal size.

Final Words

Due to the complex nature of computer issues, sometimes it’s inevitable that you may encounter other scenarios not introduced here. I’d appreciate it if you can kindly share your stories here. Anyway, I hope this troubleshooting article has helped you unfreeze your Mac, and that the rotating beach ball won’t come back.
